The film also benefits from some delightful sound design work, which is equally full of nostalgic pleasures – the sound effect on the “Zemeckis Cube” (an artefact in the game) is pure pop culture perfection. The resulting scenes are breath-taking in their imagination and execution, and genuinely scary to boot (the maze sequence gets an added twist). However, the film’s most jaw-dropping moments come courtesy of an extended sequence that takes place in the perfectly recreated sets and scenes from The Shining, after Parzival and Art3mis realise that one of the clues pertains to a date Halliday went on. Highlights include the opening race sequence (where you can play spot the Batmobile) and a simply stunning final battle scene that features a throw-down between three famous giant robots (one has been spoiled by the trailers, but the other two are worth discovering for yourself).
